A deliciously miniscule pair of scissors born from hours of staring down a microscope!
Steel – 440c Stainless steel
Overall length – 6mm
These ‘Tiny’ scissors were made to fit within the bows of the ‘Mini Lotus’ scissors that fit within the bows of the original ‘Lotus Scissors that I made in 2018.
Making miniatures has a long tradition. But, once you get past the ‘could be used as jewellery’, what is the point?
Part of it is definitely showcasing skill…things change at extremes of scale, familiar material behave differently and techniques have to be altered.
I did these partly to see if I could.
But there was another reason and that was in an aid to making the larger scissors that you can see in the background. I would work on the ‘Tinies’ that are balanced on my finger and my breathing would settle, my focus would shift down. I would tell the family that I was ‘going into the microscope’ and the hours would slip away. Then when I changed to work on the larger ‘Mini’ Lotus scissors, what looked impossible small at the beginning of the day, suddenly looked huge and manageable in comparison.
I nearly didn’t finish them because they’d done their part helping with the larger pair. I’m glad I did because now they exist in their own right.
